Loving the land
If you've read any of my comments on the Gaza withdrawal, you'll know I'm no Jewish extremist. Still, looking at this picture, from Google Earth, I am awed by what a little love can do to an otherwise inhospitable land. See what Egypt, the Palestinians, and the Israeli's have each done to the patch of desert where the three people collide.
In a Solomonic parable, two women were fighting over one child. In his famous ruling, Solomon declared that the baby should be torn in half and shared. When one of the women cried that she'd prefer that the baby be preserved alive in the hands of the other woman than killed, the wise king knew he'd found the true mother.
Ariel Sharon may be no King Solomon, but I think I have a better picture of who the true mother is.

josh, we were discussing this at supper and i have to tell you, while we didn't cite the king solomon story (great comparison, really, really great comparison,) we are definitely beginning to think that sharon is giving up land in order that he can make sure what the borders will be. that way, he won't have to negotiate with them any more than he has to. PLUS, if he gives the land away, at obviously great hardship to israel, the israelis, and jews in general, it is seen as a goodwill gesture, and possibly the world will feel better towards us (although i am very skeptical about this.) i still don't think it's ever good to give away land. one of the other points we were discussing over supper was this: for years we've all been playing with the same variables and nothing has changed. the palestinians are still volatile, peace has not been achieved in any capacity. so what does sharon do? he goes in, changes the variables. so by changing the variables, the outcome, by all logic, should likely change too. however, who knows what change that'll be? guess we'll have to wait to find out.

This topic of conversation has occupied most of our time this week. Personally, I have gone from someone who was not very understanding of the entire disengagement process, to someone who now thinks that it is about the security of the Jews and not so much about peace with the Palestinians.
Since 9000 Jews are out of harms way, should Hamas, God forbid, attack, then the IDF can react accordingly.

Josh, I have read and reread the biography of Sharon. he is no pushover and I just have to believe that he knows something is up and he can't yet share it with the world. Sharon is a warrior and warriors don't give up-they may make a tactical retreat but they don't give up.

BTC and Guyk - I can't disagree with you...or agree. I haven't taken a stance on whether this decision was right or wrong. I know that it hurts, that's for sure. But emotion doesn't solve problems.

In australia, the the final meal of the day is called actually called "tea." Thank God for those britsh colonisers.
Supper or dinner...a great debate. Definitely more tasty than disenagement, that's for sure.
Ittay - Tea sounds pleasant as well. Albeit a bit lighter sounding than the feast Erica mentions. Of course, better British colonizers than Israeli ones.
